G. Verdi
Requiem
8:30pm | St. Stephen’s Cathedral
Listen to the Italian opera composer as a brilliant church musician in the Verdi Requiem. The apocalypse has never sounded more beautiful than in the famous ‘Dies Irae’.
Giuseppe Verdi composed his most important work outside of his immense operatic output, the ‘Messa da Requiem’, on the first anniversary of the death of his friend, the writer Alessandro Manzoni. It was not originally written for liturgical use, but for a purely concertante performance. This composition is a summary of everything Verdi had already written in his operas and yet goes far beyond this. As a master of his craft, Verdi knows how to give grandiose expression to humility before the majesty of death and the hope of redemption.
